Taraji P Henson Goes Nude for P.E.T.A

Taraji P. Henson has no problem going naked - for a cause.
The actress is the latest celebrity to pose nude for PETA's "I'd Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur" campaign.
In the ad, the 40-year-actress is pictured from the side without any clothes but with her left arm blocking most of her breasts and her legs crossed to keep her private parts, well, private.
Clearly visible: Henson's vine tattoo that appears to go all the way around her waist.
The ad notes that "animals killed for their fur are electrocuted, drowned, beaten, and often skinned alive."
"Be comfortable in your own skin," it reads, "and let animals keeps theirs."
Henson was inspired to join the campaign after viewing "I Am an Animal," a documentary about fur farms and the skinning process.
"Before I saw that documentary, I would wear fur," she said. "But I saw this documentary, and I was riveted. I cried."
"I don't think a living being should suffer for the sake of fashion, period. End of story," Henson added. "You don't have to kill an animal just because you want to be hot and fly. And I really stand by that."

Poem three, Warsan Shire

the unbearable weight of staying

i don't know when love became elusive
what i know, is that no one i know has it
my fathers arms around my mothers neck
fruit too ripe to eat, a door half way open
when your name is a just a hand i can never hold
everything i have ever believed in, becomes magic.

i think of lovers as trees, growing to and
from one another searching for the same light,
my mothers laughter in a dark room,
a photograph greying under my touch,
this is all i know how to do, carry loss around until
i begin to resemble every bad memory,
every terrible fear,
every nightmare anyone has ever had.

i ask did you ever love me?
you say of course, of course so quickly
that you sound like someone else
i ask are you made of steel? are you made of iron?
you cry on the phone, my stomach hurts

i let you leave, i need someone who knows how to stay.

Poem eleven, Warsan Shire

for women who are 'difficult' to love.

you are a horse running alone
and he tries to tame you
compares you to an impossible highway
to a burning house
says you are blinding him
that he could never leave you
forget you
want anything but you
you dizzy him, you are unbearable
every woman before or after you
is doused in your name
you fill his mouth
his teeth ache with memory of taste
his body just a long shadow seeking yours
but you are always too intense
frightening in the way you want him
unashamed and sacrificial
he tells you that no man can live up to the one who
lives in your head
and you tried to change didn't you?
closed your mouth more
tried to be softer
prettier
less volatile, less awake
but even when sleeping you could feel
him travelling away from you in his dreams
so what did you want to do love
split his head open?
you can't make homes out of human beings
someone should have already told you that
and if he wants to leave
then let him leave
you are terrifying
and strange and beautiful
something not everyone knows how to love.

Minstrel Man, Langston Hughes

Because my mouth
Is wide with laughter
And my throat
Is deep with song,
You do not think
I suffer after
I have held my pain
So long?

Because my mouth
Is wide with laughter,
You do not hear
My inner cry?
Because my feet
Are gay with dancing,
You do not know
I die?

A Lover's Song, Audre Lorde

Give me fire and I will sing you morning
Finding you heart
And a birth of fruit
For you, a flame that will stay beauty
Song will take us by the hand
And lead us back to light.

Give me fire and I will sing you evening
Asking you water
And quick breath
No farewell winds like a willow switch
Against my body
But a voice to speak
In a dark room.

-Audre Lorde

If You Come Softly, Audre Lorde

If you come as softly
As wind within the trees
You may hear what I hear
See what sorrow sees.

If you come as lightly
As threading dew
I will take you gladly
Nor ask more of you.

You may sit beside me
Silent as a breath
Only those who stay dead
Shall remember death.

And if you come I will be silent
Nor speak harsh words to you.
I will not ask you why, now.
Or how, or what you do.

We shall sit here, softly
Beneath two different years
And the rich earth between us
Shall drink our tears.

Talk to strangers

'Cause angels and messiahs love can come in many forms:

and when you finally take the time to see what they’re about
perhaps you find them lonely or their wisdom trips you out.

The Scorpio Venus is rising.
I am strangling space with my sting.
And needing to posess
Something warm and near.
(The irony,

It has stung us both.)
My posession

Is too risky.

Lorna Simpson, 15 Mouths

Lorna Simpson - 15 Mouths
American, b.1960
15 Mouths, 2002

Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1960, Lorna Simpson began her career as a documentary photographer. Recognized in the mid-1980's for her provocative photographs of black women that challenged racial and gender stereotypes, Lorna Simpson soon began to investigate the myriad readings of photography, making conceptual compositions that combined black-and-white images with text and used the discrepancy between the two to block traditional or stereotyped interpretations. She is perhaps best known for works that link words with potent images and require the viewer to participate in the creation of the meaning.

This piece was originally an instillation piece that consisted of 15 video recorded mouths humming the Rodgers and Hart tune Easy to Remember. She chose the song specifically as she has vivid memories of John Coltrane’s version of the song being present throughout her childhood. The text that goes along with the photo seems to refer to a monologue inside those whom the lips belong.

Mo(u)rning Sunlight

Belonging to my exposed skin,
You mold warm around collarbone.
Effortlessly.
Rising to the thought of you,
I am available.
And you're easy.

But the days are short.
Barely time for you to dance,
And I remember when
We were spinning around our shadows.

The evening has hurried herself here
With no consideration for our exchanges and
I am itching for the caress of your heat.
Whimpering to ghosts
Who taunt me in the dark spaces you've left behind.
Crashing quietly,
Like stars in the fragile night.

Waiting,
Alone
For the dawn.
Who,
Is staying away,
And straying sooner.
Sunlight,
Absent at my bedside.
A tease.
Rarely returning my affections.

But I am learning to exsist,
Without my skin prowled by your fingertips.
Bronzed with each touch.
She screams softly
The song of a distant lover.

I am mourning.
We have became night time and buisness.
Nothing
Simple
Seems to last.
Nothing too hot
Can be grasped.
But I love with my palms.
Wearing burns as a sign of my audacity.
And a warning of my bad habits.
Be warned.

There are hairs that only exsist when you whisper to the back of my neck.
I want to find home in their universe.
Hum the songs that they sway to,
Because I can't recognize this silence most live in.
Their quiet love that resists moans.
And manifests,
Overcast,
Causing disasters in their bedrooms.

I want to remember what it felt like,
Consumed in this embrace.
Glowing.
